SUEZ supplies technology for Montreal organic waste treatment project

In 2005, the City of Montreal set ambitious goals to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 30% by 2020. They aren’t stopping there. New targets call for an 80% reduction in GHG by 2050.

SUEZ – Water Technology & Solutions division will fully furnish the technology and renewable energy assets for the city’s newest organic waste treatment center. The facility is expected divert 60,000 tonnes of organic waste from local landfills, transforming what had once been trash into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas (RNG), producing enough renewable natural gas (RNG) to power around 3,600 households.

Gas generated through anaerobic digestion is non-polluting and diverts waste from landfills, leading to greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions.  Additionally, the product of RNG offsets fossil fuel natural gas use further reducing GHG emissions. Additional GHG reductions will be achieved through decreased transportation of the organic material for treatment.

The plant will use SUEZ assets from beginning to end.

SUEZ will supply its Re:Sep* pre-treatment process, an integrated multi-step process which provides enhanced organics capture and effective separation of packaging, inorganics, and grit.

At the heart of the plant, SUEZ’s Advanced Anaerobic Digestion Technology (ADT), which recycles the organic waste slurry into methane rich biogas and other valuable byproducts using bacteria in the absence of oxygen. The ADT system uses proven technology to ensure stable processes and consistently high biogas yields.

Biogas produced through the ADT system will then be further refined into RNG using the Methanis* membrane biogas upgrading system. Methanis is a complete biogas purification system, enabling biogas from anaerobic digesters to be upgraded to a level of methane content suitable for pipeline-quality renewable natural gas. The system also comprises a reliable and optimized biogas conditioning stage to remove gas contaminants and moisture prior to the membrane upgrading stage.

Wastewater at the plant will be treated using SUEZ’ industry-leading LEAP*mbr bioreactor technology. LEAPmbr uses SUEZ’ ZeeWeed* membranes, which treat wastewater while maintaining low energy costs and high productivity with a flexible design that can fit on a smaller footprint than conventional MBR systems.

The new plant, which will be built in Montreal East, is the second of five organic waste treatment centers that the City of Montreal is planning to develop.
