From offshore water injection to enhanced oil recovery, SUEZ solves your challenges

Offshore water injection consists of injecting seawater into oil reservoirs to maintain or increase oil production. A number of reservoirs, such as those found off the coast of Brazil and West Africa, in the North Sea and in the Gulf of Mexico, require that the water be treated before injection. This treatment consists of removing the sulfate present in seawater to avoid scaling, which would adversely impact oil production. Nanofiltration membranes are typically used for this application, which when in combination with a proper prefiltration scheme and chemical program, ensure that practically all the sulfate is removed from the seawater.

Enhancing oil production can also be achieved through membrane technology by designing water injection systems where water salinity can be adjusted. Recent experiments have shown that reduced salinity water can positively impact the amount of oil being recovered from a series of different reservoirs. This technology can be promising for existing fields in the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico where oil production is declining. In addition, it may be beneficial to use low salinity technology instead of sulfate removal in early stages since SUEZ's salt reducing membranes also remove sulfate from seawater.

SUEZ has developed the first of its kinds process in the industry that consists of a modular variable salinity system specifically designed to meet the conditions necessary for the preparation and injection of different chemicals along the EOR cycle. The system provides the flexibility to separate feedwater of varying salinity levels and create fluids that are consistently low in hardness while maintaining constant effluent salinity and flow rate. 

Benefits of Variable Salinity Water Injection

SUEZ’s variable salinity water injection solution helps optimize CEOR operation in addition to providing cost and environmental benefits. This process allows producers to inject only the exact amount needed into the reservoir resulting in higher oil recovery and lower risk.

This innovative approach eliminates the need for an external source of salt, decreases the amount of polymer required for the CEOR water injection process and reduces the time required to change from one salinity water to another, directly representing a lower CAPEX and OPEX as well as little downtime between various flooding stages.

The system is based on a pre-engineered modular design comprising of ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis technologies. This translates to quick deployment and installation reducing field service requirements and lowering project risk. The process can be fully automated with SUEZ’s digital services allowing direct access to expert advice while minimizing operating expenses.
